A few days ago, a St Petersburg, Florida Business, Williams Art Gallery On Central Avenue have embraced a new way of doing credit card transactions that saves them between $4,000 and $5,000 a year on fees. Mr. Ward, the owner said” most services charge not only a flat monthly fee but also varying percentages of a purchase, depending on what kind of credit card is used. Squared does neither of those things. Instead, it takes a flat fee of 2.75 percent of a purchase, regardless of what type of card is swiped. And the application and card reader are free.

The tiny device is an inch wide (quarter sized) and plugs into any iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone or Android phone. All anyone has to do is sign the screen with their finger. The Square reader makes any iPhone into a credit card reader. If you set up an account with Square this credit card reader comes free with your account.

Mariana Williams said that people usually have three reactions when they use the Square: Bewilderment. A gasp. Then a squeal.

"They're all like, 'Oooh, I get to sign my name with my finger?' " said Williams, who has been using Square for about two months. "Some of them try to get really precise. Others just go for it."

Paper is not needed for this process and one could have a receipt sent to his or her phone or email.

Research shows that Tampa, Florida is one of the top 20 cities in the country to use ‘square. There are more than 3,600 active Square users in the area

Among the companies that use Square are Safari Choppers, a helicopter tour company in St. Petersburg, and Rover Done Over, a mobile pet grooming business in Tampa.

Great article, Fran. I've seen the Square around here in small businesses and I'm all for it! In some of our past business ventures, we've needed to accept credit cards and it was mind boggling the amount we paid in fees. Hallelujah for competition to all that!

I know what you mean. I live in a small town and some of the businesses have stopped taking credit cards - the place that I get my hair cut is just cash, period. It must be really difficult to own your own business.

Hi Fran,

I am such a dinosaur. Just the thought of this device scares the jellybeans out of me.

LOL, dawn

It takes me a good long time to change. My daughter recently informed me that I could "deposit" or cash a check via the internet. That is awesome...I have been paying my bills on line for years, but had to go a few miles away to cash a check.

Great article. My only question is 'what does the business do, if there is an outage?' like the Blackberry problem that happens every once in awhile. Sounds simple and inexpensive.

I don't know and I think there are probably things to work out - there are some security issues that concern people. Technology is moving faster than I could figure out what is going on.
