If you have been reading my articles, then you know that I am quite intrigued with Dragonflies. They are so beautiful and some people have dragonfly stories to tell that are meaningful and/or symbolic.
Just yesterday, my husband, Jim saw dragonflies swarming at the 13 th hole (odd, huh?). The thing is that they are always swarming at the 13 th hole. They like it there. Research shows that they tend to come back to the same location in a few minutes, or hours, or by the next day. Of course there is no guarantee that will happen.
I did some research and there is more than one explanation for this.
1. They are mating
2. They are migrating
3. They are flying around and killing things (referred to as swarm-feeding or swarm-foraging. They can catch their prey better if they are in swarms
As for where they swarm besides golf courses, they swarm at mountain summits, along dirt roads, in back yards, over meadows and anywhere that it is windy.
Why Are We So Fascinated By Dragonflies?
Just the very look of a dragonfly is breath-taking. Their fragile wings and their fairy-like appearance make them seem mystical. Actually, to some people they are mystical. A dragonfly tattoo is one of the most popular tattoos one could get. There are so many kinds of dragonfly jewelry.
Here is a perfect example of how dragonflies are the cores of many stories.
The Boy Who Made Dragonfly A Zuni Myth retold by Tony Hillerman (ISBN
0-8263-0910-0)
Two small children having fallen asleep are accidentally left behind when
their parents and the rest of the villagers abandon their village in a hard
times to find food. As time passes, the young boy constructs a toy insect
out of corn and grasses to comfort his younger sister. Eventually, the toy
comes to life and operates as a messenger between the children and the gods.
The insect later takes the name Dragonfly. This teaching story of the Zunis,
a Pueblo People based in New Mexico, was first recorded by Frank Cushing
