I think everyone is curious about myths, legends and tales handed down from generation to generation. Perhaps, that is the reason that one of my most popular articles is about dragonflies. No matter what season of the year, readers click on to read about dragonflies and how I came to be interested in them. (It all began with a funeral ….if you care to read……http://questionables.com/Legend756344-Why-I-Am-Fascinated-By-Dragonflies-Dragonfly-Quotes-That-Are-Mystical.htm)

Maybe part of the fascination with dragonflies is that besides their luminous beauty and looking fairy-like, they have been around for at least 300 million years ago, even before dinosaurs roamed the earth.

For centuries folklore has promoted dragonflies as being symbols of strength and supernatural powers. I look at dragonflies as a symbol of change and maturity because they actually are only a dragonfly for about two months and yet they could live for six years. They spend most of their life being a nymph in the water before their metamorphosis into a full grown beautiful creature. Isn’t that how we humans are? Most of our life is spent learning lessons and maturing and then, finally, one day, we began to blossom into the person we were meant to be.

Once in a while, a dragonfly drops around to visit me. Sometimes it could be on my living room window, but two days ago one flew around me and then as I entered my car, the dragonfly also flew in….just a short visit, to perhaps remind me that my loved ones who have passed away are all OK. Perhaps to remind me to keep learning lessons and maturing, so I could blossom and be free.

If you see a dragonfly or one is following you or maybe even lands on you for a few seconds, appreciate the fact that they are connecting you with an existence centuries ago, even before the dinosaurs.

If you dream that a dragonfly lands on your body then you will have excellent news from someone far away from home. If you see a dead dragonfly, then the news will be bad. A dragonfly perched gracefully on some other object shows that you will soon be having guests that may be hard to get rid of. The Dream Dictionary

It probably means that you have high levels on seratonin (that attracts mosquitoes also) GRIN

We have a great abundance of dragon flies this year especially. They hover and swoop in the sunlight in front of the barn, scores of them. Many land on the fence or all around. Looking closely at them, they have different gossamer colors. Predominantly they are greenish or purple. We have both large or smaller ones. We like to see them because we think they erratic flight is to eat mosquitos. I'm not sure that's what they are doing, but we like to think so. I enjoyed reading about them and I too am drawn to stories about them.

I am kind of a squeamish guy, and impute malice and negative energy to creatures. A habit from childhood. But dragon flies I have always associated with Tinker Belle. Thanks for bringing this up. It makes me reflect and think of times gone by. Loved it.

Wow, 300 million years! That's incredible, Fran. I love dragonflies, I think they're beautiful, but now I have a different kind of respect for them. I like your analogy between them and us, and your last paragraph is just gorgeous!
