I Was At The Morgan Stanley Building Right After The 911 Attack, But Not The One In New York

My husband Jim and I did not turn the television on that morning. We were busily showering and preparing ourselves for a visit with our financial counselor, Jay. It was a 10:00 a.m. appointment. We didn’t ‘t turn the car radio on, as we were discussing our finances and what we would like to talk with Jay about.

We arrived at the Morgan Stanley building a few minutes before 10:00 a.m. As always, Jay politely met us in the foyer and greeted us.

Then he calmly said, “ Have you heard the news today?”

“No, we haven’t had the television or radio on today.”

Then, he told us the shattering news. Of course we were shocked and heartbroken, as Jay was but he continued to act in a professional way.

“Jay, we could cancel our appointment and come back another time.

“That won’t be necessary. You are here. We may as well go over your portfolio while you are here.”

We all tried to concentrate on the subject at hand, but it was difficult. It was an eerie feeling for me, almost like the world was coming to an end.

After we were there a few minutes, one of Jay’s co-workers stuck her head in the door and informed us that the building that housed the Morgan Stanley in New York had just collapsed.

I could only imagine how Jay must have felt; just knowing his fellow workers had just died.

Needless to say, at that point, our finances were the last thing on our mind.

For me, nothing ever seemed the same after that day.

Even time will never erase that memory.

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children. “
