Anti-Ageing Prayer: Remembering That Happiness Is Not Measured By Youth Or Age

Lord, help me to stay young at heart as my body ages.

And not be closed-minded and full of yesterday’s rages.

For yesterday is only a memory to be visited from time to time

And not a place to linger too long and worship like a shrine.

May I remember that happiness is not measured by youth or age;

But measured by timeless snatches of joys and smiles that fill an empty page.

Let me be grateful for each day and each passing year

And know as I grow older, there is nothing to fear.

Don’t let me bore others with dull talk of my petty aches and pain;

Let me be like a bright penny that shines even through darkness and rain.

May I not drift into a small world that is only about my problems and me

But let me expand my world daily and involve myself with injustices that I see.

May I not look to my children for entertainment when I am lonely and sad

Instead, let me encourage them to live their own lives and for that be glad.

As painful as it is, let me fully release them to the world and give them wings.

So they may soar on their own unique path, then I’ll know their heart sings.

Don’t let me lament too long on the “good old days” and  “remember when?”

Nor linger too long on thoughts about disappointments from a imperfect friend.

For technology and changes have produced life-saving and amazing things

That many people could only imagine through far-fetched and magical dreams.

Give me my own unique dialogue about growing old

As new discoveries and life surprises sweetly unfold.

Instead of “growing old, let me know that this time is a “new season”

Of embracing new challenges and joys that gives living a reason.

Fran, this is an amazing work. This coming from a new empty nest mom. Wahhh! The thing is--she is doing exactly what she planned and worked so hard for. Now I am free to try my wings again. Hmmm. Hey, it looks like we could be the new "Golden Girls"

You were one of my wife's favorites. Joyce Dunn passed away June 2 2011. We were married 51 years. I thought I would let you know why you don't hear from her. Jim Dunn
