She was young, that’s for sure, 21 years old. You could tell she had only been married a few months. The two diamonds on her left hand looked new, as they sparkled and she kept looking at them, as if surprised herself that she was married.

She was ready to go when he arrived but noted he had a beautifully wrapped package that he awkwardly presented to her. Her arms reached out and gingerly grasped the package. She slowly opened it, as if cherishing the moment.

“Oh, it’s beautiful.”

She didn’t think he picked it out by himself. The silky, cream-colored maternity blouse was decorated with rhinestone buttons all down the front and at the band of the long sleeves.

“It’s a neutral color. I could wear it anywhere.”

She hugged him, softly, her baby bump slightly protruding in between their bodies.

Daddy took her to a quite little restaurant in the downtown area. She noted an older couple who were sitting in a booth because they caught her eye, as if to ask, “why are you with this man, twice your age?”

She wondered what was on his mind because she could not recall the two of them going out to lunch by themselves. She wondered if she had done something wrong or if he was ill or …

“I just wanted to tell you that everything is going to be all right.” Your mother said you are worried about paying bills and some other things.”

“Well, yea, a little bit.”

She vaguely remembered something about the electric bill being high¸ but now it seemed so vague and far away.

“Shug, Jim is a fine man. He has a good job. I bet you’ll be buying a house soon and you’ll have a beautiful baby. Everything is going to be fine.”

“Don’t worry about anything. OK?”

She smiled and realized what her Daddy was trying to do. He was reassuring her. She had only been married 3 months and maybe he felt he had “left something out” and not given her a proper “marriage talk.”

That’s the way Daddy was.

Fast forwarding a few months down the road, Daddy was making sure his blonde, blue-eyed granddaughter had a good start and “not to worry” about that, either. The day little Julie Ann was born, he started a bank account in her name, an insurance policy and also presented her with a piggy bank. Ever after that, we he would come visit he put a shiny quarter in her little hand and watch her drop it in the yellow piggy bank.

Then, one day when Julie Ann was older, her Daddy took her out to lunch. He wanted to make sure she wasn’t worried about the electric bill or something like that.

Kleenex please. This was beautiful Fran. I was going to say it was something only a woman could understand but then again there are those Dad's out there who would understand perfectly too. Beautiful.

Maybe I'm confused, but was that the end of the story? It seems truncated.
