Since I wrote an article, Taco Bell Being Sued For Strange Ingredients That Are Not Meat-Make Your Own, I feel than I should balance the scale and write what Taco Bell is saying and doing to fight back.

As you probably recall in my previous article, I had stated the following:

A class-action lawsuit was filed Friday in federal court by the Montgomery law firm. Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles against one of America’s favorite Mexican Food Chains, Taco Bell. Attorney Dee Miles stated that after an investigation, it was found that Taco Bell's "meat mixture" was less than 35 percent beef.

The United States Department of Agriculture defines ground beef as “seasoned flesh of cattle” and has to be at least 40% of meat to meet requirements. It seems that tacos from Taco Bell are allegedly 36% of meat.

Now, it seems, Taco Bell is fighting back with a vigorous campaign that states, “Thank You for Suing Us.” This was splashed on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. The idea is to publicly thank the law firm, Beasley Allen for suing them.

In the ad, Taco Bell said they were excited about the opportunity to present the “truth about the ingredients in their beef. The ad states that their Tacos are 88% beef and 12% Secret Recipe.

“As a third-generation franchisee of the Taco Bell brand, I’m extremely proud of the food we serve and want everyone to know exactly what’s in our seasoned beef,” said Kyle Cook, Restaurant General Manager of Lord and Cook Ventures, a Taco Bell franchisee who is featured in the ad. “These ads show real employees who serve our food everyday and are passionate about the quality of our seasoned beef.”

The other 12 percent includes: water, representing about 3 percent; and spices, representing another 3 percent to 5 percent, including salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, sugar, garlic powder, cocoa powder and a proprietary blend of Mexican spices and natural flavors.

Another 3 percent to 5 percent is represented by oats, starch, sugar, yeast, citric acid and other ingredients, which the company said contribute to the flavor, moisture, consistency and quality of the product (from: http://www.nrn.com/article/taco-bell-defends-itself-new-ads#ixzz1FHIMqDlP

If you would like to buy a Crunchwrap from Taco Bell, they are offering to their loyal customers one for $.88 until March 5, 2011. The Crunchwrap Supreme normally sells for $2.39. The limit is 2 per customer. The Crunchwrap Supreme contains 560 calories.  It contains Nacho Cheese Sauce, Seasoned Beans, Sour Cream, Tomato, Tortilla, Tostada Shell and Lettuce.

I do like those double decker tacos where they put a crispy taco inside a soft taco... maybe it's safe to go back into the water after all...

I find this whole article and the subject matter very informative. My first reaction is to coin the phrase that if you get lemons make lemonade and all that ... That's exactly what Taco Bell has done. Instead of boo hooing, they turned the tables and used it as a great opportunity to get all kinds of publicity out of it. Thanks for writing this one! Well done!

As much as I detest the shady wording and obtuse definitions allowed by our government, well, sometimes you just gotta go with taste!!
