February 14, 2011, Hong Kong, China: McDonald’s announced that one may now schedule a wedding there. The owners at the downtown McDonalds, near the city’s financial district said that they were receiving at least 10 calls a month from people asking to have their wedding ceremony there. (South China Morning Post News). These events will be called McWeddings.

It was reported that Kelvin Kowng, a young model threw a surprise engagement party place on Valentine’s Day for his girlfriend, Ashley Tse. I am guessing their wedding ceremony will take place there, also.

It seems that Hong Kong couples enjoy their dating experiences there, so this seems like a romantic place to marry.

"They date here, they grew their love here, so when they have this important day they want to come over here," Shirley Chang, the managing director of Hong Kong's McDonald's outlets, told Reuters.

The McWedding Package, launched on Jan. 1, includes McDonald’s food, wedding gifts, pink invitation cards with the Golden Arches, a wedding cake made of McDonald’s apple pies, a pair of tiny souvenir crystal "M" rings, and decorations featuring the Hamburger and Ronald McDonald, according to The Globe and Mail.

The wedding package carries a price tag of $1,283.00 and each couple could invite up to 100 people. That is 9,999 Hong Kong dollars.

For $165.00 extra, one may rent a "white balloon" gown rental; a balloon corsage ($11), balloon wedding cake ($88), and a large pink McDonalds backdrop ($321)

Two wedding parties have already confirmed for this year and around 70 other couples in talks. McDonal's is hoping The McWedding will be successful at a time of economic uncertainty, particularly with traditional Chinese weddings and banquets often imposing a huge financial burden on young couples.

Since I am a frugal person, I am trying to figure something out….If you have 100 guests and they each spend $6.00 that comes to $600.00. You are supposed to get wedding gifts (not specified exactly what kind of gifts), pink invitation cards, a wedding cake made of McDonald’s Apple Pie and a pair of tiny souvenir crystal "M" rings, and decorations featuring the Hamburger and Ronald McDonald. Hmm…considering wedding cakes cost several hundred dollars (I know this because I have 4 daughters and have put on 4 weddings)….this might be well worth the money. In fact, it is probably a bargain, if you really want to exchange your vows at McDonald's.

It will be interesting to see how many couples exchange vows there. I wonder: if I were a wedding guest if I could also get an ice cream cone, as an added bonus and I also wonder if Ronald McDonald would be willing to be the best man.

I don't know what to say. McGreasy wedding? I would've never thunk it. I guess when the economy is bad...it's really baaaaad. I say protect your coronary arteries and go to the nearest county judge and take your vows, but that's just me.:-) Nice article though.
