Martin Luther King Fought For The Poor: Sandra Bullock Said Poor People Are Gross At Golden Globes

I wasn’t going to write today. I was planning on spending the day reading, but I kept thinking about the Golden Globe Nominations that I viewed on television last night.  It was kind of nice seeing the stars and making mental notes of what movies I would like to see.  It was pleasant until I heard something that stopped me dead in my tracks:

Ricky Gervais, the Golden Globe Host said, “ I know Sandra Bullock doesn’t like public transportation because she just told me ((backstage) that poor people are gross and they smell bad.”

I’m not sure if that was supposed to be a joke or if it was really true that Ms Bullock made that statement, but either way, it really left a bad taste in my mouth.  Is this what America has come to?  We can insult or joke about the poor on national television.  I searched on the Internet and very little was said about this statement.  Are people hoping this statement will slip through the cracks?  I heard it with my very own ears.

Jesses Jackson once said, "Don't look down on anyone unless you are helping them up."

Here we are today celebrating Martin Luther King, who fought for the poor people and yet we have a quote from a wealthy celebrity insulting the poor.

Here is what Mr. King said about the poor. “King told the Biblical story of Dives, who went to hell because he passed Lazarus every day and refused to see his plight. King warned, to raucous applause, 'If America does not use her vast resource of wealth to end poverty and make it possible for all of God’s children to have the basic necessities of life, she too is going to hell.' He went on to show how the strike was a part of the new direction the movement needed to take" (www.isreview.com).

Has America really advanced that much toward their attitude about the poor and minorities?

Is Sandra Bullock going to tell her African-American son, Louie that although Martin Luther King (same race) fought for the poor and minorities, she did indeed make the statement that “poor people are gross and smell bad?”

Meaningful Quotes By Martin Luther King

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Martin Luther King:

A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.

A lie cannot live.

A man can't ride your back unless it's bent.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

A man who won't die for something is not fit to live.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom.

I think Sandra's alleged comment is the prevailing belief in this country. Look at how the poor are being left out of state budgets in lieu of business incentives (cutting business taxes, canceling social programs). Humor usually has some truth at it's roots, and many times progressive humor points us at those things that we refuse to acknowledge.

Hi Fran

Who knows if she really said that-- I doubt it--it was probably a joke on his part. Jessie Jackson is quite low on my list of people who are supposedly helping others and I have little respect for him. As for Dr. King, he was a class act--one in a billion--I miss leaders, men or women of his style and thoughts...good quotes too--thanks for writing...

Are you kidding me? LOL you watched the show and you thought that Ricky Gervais comment about Sandra was true? LOL

Of course he was joking but only because he was trying, throughout the whole show mind you, to really show us how much of a joke Hollywood has become this days.

Is remark about how much the americans really don't care about the foreign movie award, how Jenny from the block (Jennifer Lopez) is really just another phony who lives like every other rich person in Hollywood, etc, etc...

I know we are from very different generations but cammon you must be a little bit more open minded about this kind of humour. I know you dont see it ( and I truly am sorry for that) that Ricky Gervais is, in fact, a commedy genius.

Thanks for reading ( sorry if my english is bad )

Bye

Ricky may have been kidding, I didn't see it, I don't watch things like that...well I don't watch many things period. Knew I'd be able to read about it though as it had the highest ratings in it's history. As to the comment though, I believe a lot of people believe it that don't admit to it in public. Look at the people we elect to represent us. We balance the budget by bailing out the rich and giving the richest of them more tax cuts, while cutting social services, education, and environmental protection laws. Nice article.

Wow! I'm not happy about the "joke". It's sad how the rich look down on the poor. We are human too, and sometimes we cry because we don't have a dollar to buy our daughters a bag of chips. People like that, you just have to pray for them and let God take care of the rest. I am poor, but I'm her movie fan. I wonder if she knows how many poor people love her. Ma'am, thanks for caring.

I just don't know what to say to that comment. Whether she said it or not, we are all God's children and come from the same place - universal consciousness. :-) So feed every mouth which feels hungry. :-) Thank you.

I didn't see that, I very seldom watch television, can't find anything on there that interests me- but if Sandra ever wanted to kill anybody in her life- I'll bet it's him! Whether she said that or not......he may have just destroyed her career- a lot of people will believe she did....if I were she- I would sue him for defamation of character.

You know, I think it's interesting that the word "poor" was used in reference to being smelly and unwashed.....I personally have been in the presence of some smelly, if you will, people, who I know to have had fat bank accounts- so the state of one's finances has nothing to do with one's personal hygiene. If indeed, the largest population of "poor" people are unwashed- perhaps it because of an overall tendency of those people, not to extend ther abilities to their fullest, and therefore not be able to rise above that level of poverty. This disinclination may be extended even to their personal maintinence as well. As only one example: When I was a kid growing up- my family would have fallen into that catagory of "poor" due to various other reasons besides our personal hygiene-as we were probably the cleanest kids on the block; the astringent, and cheap, waters of Tide detergent having scourged our hair skin and clothes to an odorless, spotlessly cleansed condition- thanks to our mother- the gypsy- probably the most clean conscious woman I've ever known in my life. The gist of this is: this would be an erroneous statement no matter who makes it- poor does not equal dirty; and clean does not equal rich....Always Ella--poor, but squeaky clean-

I have a hard time believing that Sandra Bullock said that, Fran. Ricky Gervais is the one who has no compunction about tearing people apart and humiliating them in public. All in the name of humor, but it isn't funny. I've seen Sandra being interviewed and she's always been compassionate and down to earth.
