Once I was at a writer’s workshop/meeting sitting next to an aspiring artist. We began to chat about if writing and painting were alike in some way. She said both being a writer and an artist is the same. She further went on to say that there is a blank canvass/paper that can be filled with whatever you would like. That’s the way a new year seems to me. It is your choice and mine to fill up this blank space.
It could hold sadness as well as happiness. It could contain times that are not so exciting, but perhaps the plot is leading up to something life-changing.
“There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning.” Louis L. Amour, American Writer (1908-1988).
As I think about 2010 ending and spiraling into a brand new year. I wonder what new thing or person will crop up in my life. While accepting new friends and experiences, I will savor and treasure the old.
“If I nurture the newness while I have it, perhaps I won’t lose it-at least not for something less. And if I nurture what I keep, perhaps I won’t miss what I have lost” Jan Denise, American columnist, author and speaker.
What Adventure Lies Ahead?
Sometimes we plan our life so carefully and look forward to a certain event or a certain change. Then something happens and what we so carefully planned for never takes place. I can say from personal experience, that even though it is painful, in the end, The Divine has a much better idea than I could ever hope for. I discovered some great quotes on that subject:
“We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us” E.M. Forster, British writer (1879-1970)
“Faith is the daring of the soul to go farther than it can see.” William Newton Clarke, American Clergyman (1841-1912).
“To take the first step in faith, you don’t have to see the whole staircase: just take the first step.”
Be a Visionary, A Trendsetter, A Leader
What would happen if you did something crazy - something that others would think is “way out” or not in vogue? What would be the worse thing that could happen to you? Words from others that you may not think complimentary really are, if you think about it. Others may say, “she/he is different or odd.” What they really mean is she/he is a visionary, a trendsetter or a leader.
These quotes are challenges for all of us:
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
“Our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world...as in being able to remake ourselves.”

Top-level comments on this article: (10 total)Wow, nice quotes Fran. I like your thoughts as well. I totally agree about moving into the New Year is certainly filled with suspense and it is the beginning of a new chapter or perhaps opening a new book like you said. And I love that quote from Louis Amour as I have experienced and know that will experience it time and again. Thank you and Happy New Year!

You are an optimist, a beautiful optimist. What a great way to think of the New Year - a blank canvas to fill up with adventures and happenings and occurrences. And you're absolutely right - take some risks and do something out of the ordinary or different. What is the worst that will happen? Criticism from someone. So? Your article is right on the money and gives a great perspective.
Hi Fran, I love the quotes, especially,“To take the first step in faith, you don’t have to see the whole staircase: just take the first step."
I also agree with you that the new year should be seen as newness, freshness or a new experience. Great article. Happy New Year
Great quotes Fran. I've noticed my plans may take me in directions, but rarely lead to the exact place I had in mind and never lead to an end, just new beginnings, different directions or deeper in. Happy New Year! Val
Good New Year's thoughts Fran, I don't make resolutions either. I would like to grow and change and you know who will help with that?!
What a wonderfully inspiring article, Fran! It resonates for me from start to finish and makes me feel very good about this coming year and life in general - and kind of safe in my own journey. I love the quote by Louis L. Amour - actually, I love them all. Thanks a million!
This was a great article Fran. I love the quote, “We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us" E.M. Forster, British writer (1879-1970) I like it because we can plan and prepare all we like, but if something's not meant to be it just won't.Sometimes life just happens and we have to learn to roll with it. It's hard sometimes but usually we have no choice in the matter. Thanks for wise words to start the year off with. Happy New Year.
Inspiring indeed, Fran. May we all face the New Year in a better perspective and overcome every obstacle in our way. A new beginning has just begun !!
Wonderfully inspiring! That kind of thinking always leads to better days, even if their not. Thank you, and have a wonderful new year Fran Larson.
