What? I Only Have Hours To Live? Then Bring On The Chocolate: Struggling to Grow Up!

I think God is trying to tell me something. It is the strangest thing. Every time I think about overeating or eating something I should not, a certain Bible Scripture comes to mind. I will visualize cupcakes, mac and cheese and all my favorite "bad foods." I will then picture people my age eating all this bad food. Then, suddenly, this scripture comes to mind:

When I was a child, I spoke like a child; I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. English Standard Version (©2001)

I guess God works in mysterious ways and I don't mean to sound like Oral Roberts but if you think about it, the scripture really does fit. Why should someone my age be eating candy, cake, etc as if I had the metabolism as I did when I was a child? Also, children need more calories. I remember the days when I could eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich just a few minutes before dinner and then I would wolf down something heavy, such as spaghetti. Those were the days, but now it is a new day. I am no longer a child. Why can't I get that through my head?

When my husband, Jim went off cholesterol medication, he became a new man. No more pain (from the statins). He had pain for at least 10 years; every day it was getting worse. Now, I am doing a massive research on cholesterol (what to eat, what not to eat, natural remedies, etc.) So he is finding out too, he can no longer eat and think like a child. Now that he is painless, he will gladly give up what foods he needs to. Also, he has lost 11 pounds.

When we think of all the comfort foods like cupcakes, candy, mac and cheese, it gives us a good feeling and reminds us of our childhood. So, it is even more difficult to realize as an adult, we have to "give up childish ways." Childhood is measured out by sounds and smells and sights, before the dark hour of reason grows. ~John Betjeman, Summoned by Bells

Another thing to consider is that when I was growing up, I don't recall hearing much about "cholesterol" or "bad food." I think my parents and other parents did the best they could, with what knowledge they had (knowledge is power). So, I can't and won't blame my parents for my bad eating habits. Its just time to "give up childish ways."

However, if I am told I only have a couple of days to live, I hope I feel like eating because at that point, I will indulge myself with all kinds of chocolate candy.

GOOD stuff - God is teaching many in His Body the same things. My diet (which I always thought was "healthy" after all, my folks sold health foods when I was in grade school, before cholesterol was even a dirty word they KNEW) I am no longer doing any white stuff (sugar, flour, pop corn, rice, potatoes etc) in an effort to watch my blood sugars 9while elevate the cholesterol greatly).... I am eating fresh veggies, fruits and lean fish, chicken and meat, some dairy (Eggs got bad press years ago and they aren't bad!) I lately had a serious reaction to "sugar alcohol" sweeteners so there goes the rest of the list. 2 Weeks ago I, who don't add salt to anything read labels - oh, my goodness. So now I am watching labels for salt - my BP has dropped immensely and stayed down...

My blood sugars came way down by adding chromium picolinate - and I am losing weight.

SO hand on and hang in there. I am wondering what I will discover next week - I asked the Lord why I am just figuring out about the salt now (I KNEW but hadn't realized the labels) and felt He was laying on my heart that I couldn't have handled all of that info and change at ones - He is right!

I'm just wondering Fran- What kind of pains did the statins cause your husband? I started taking statins about 8 months ago- I maybe need to know what to look out for... I got so tired of worrying about what to eat and what not to eat- I just started eating anything I wanted. My cholestrol is only slightly elevated- maybe I won't even take these pills.....probably just need to give up ice cream.....yeah..like I will...- Got two tubs in the fridge right now. Interesting article Fran- Thanks- Always- Ella

I think the child in us remains alive, no matter what age we get to, Fran! I doubt we'll be able to ever convince ours to grow up!! I think I'm quite happy being childish when it comes to certain chocolate things - I bought a cupcake today that was chocolate with chocolate mousse in the middle and chocolate icing on top - and I'm going back tomorrow to get another one!!

I think everything in moderation is a good rule to follow. I don't think I could ever totally give up mac and cheese, chocolate, cheese and the list goes on and on,  Congrats to your husband for losing the weight and getting healthy! Great article.

When I was old I thought like an old man, but now that I am ancient, I can hardly wait to think anything anymore. LOL. Just kidding. God bless.

Bad habits are hard to give up. Some developed much too early and be with us for a long time. All of a sudden, we have to adjust our life pattern due to "mature age" which produced additional burden our bodies no longer can sustain but we must change. Have you heard of 9 out of 10 (men) have a heart condition ?

I know a 94 year old woman who only eats chocolate and drinks red wine. She says she is trying to kill herself, but I think it is having the opposite effect! Nice article, well written, and long live those beans.
