Years ago, before I even began to write, I read Papa's Daughter by Thyra (Ferre) Bjorn. This is the story about a young Swedish Ministers daughter that comes to the United States with her family as a part of her mothers dream. Her nickname was button. When Button grew up, married and had two daughters, she began to be very depressed. The doctors could not understand why she was in this dark place and neither did Button. She struggled through this depressive state for about 5 years. Her doctor, who was trying everything he could, urged her to write notes to him expressing how she felt. She began with little short notes explaining her emotions. The notes soon swelled into detailed letters on other subjects besides how she was feeling. Button began to notice that she didn't feel depressed anymore. Her family delighted when she returned to the mischievous, spirited Button that she once was.
George Orwell describes writing like this: "Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand."
Where would the world be without writers? Christians who were inspired and called by God to write words originally wrote the Bible on a scroll. Where would we be without these inspiring explanations of how and why we are created?
What would our society be today, if not for books? Authors have written books on history, science, math, philosophy, self-improvement and fiction. Books are the soul of our being and the heart of many devoted and talented writers. Everywhere you look works are needed. Words are needed for instruction, recipes, and education. Words are needed for inspiration and motivation.
Most importantly, words are needed for communication. Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee and just as hard to sleep after" (Anne Morrow Lindbergy)
Since it is Be Kind To Writers and Publishers Month, I wish to give my fellow writers some encouragement, so I am sharing my most favorite quotes about writing.
Quotes That Will Inspire, Encourage and Motivate Writers
"This manuscript of yours that has just come back from another editor is a precious package. Don't consider it rejected. Consider that you've addressed it 'to the editor who can appreciate my work' and it has simply come back stamped 'Not at this address'. Just keep looking for the right address." - Barbara Kingsolver
"And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt." ~Sylvia Plath
"The act of putting pen to paper encourages pause for thought, this in turn makes us think more deeply about life, which helps us regain our equilibrium. "
~Norbet Platt
"It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by. How else, indeed, to clap the net over the butterfly of the moment? For the moment passes, it is forgotten; the mood is gone; life itself is gone. That is where the writer scores over his fellows: he catches the changes of his mind on the hop." ~Vita Sackville-West
"Writing became such a process of discovery that I couldn't wait to get to work in the morning: I wanted to know what I was going to say." ~Sharon O'Brien
"There are two kinds of writer: those that make you think, and those that make you wonder"- Brian Aldiss
: A writer should say to himself, not, how can I get more money? but How can I reach more readers (without lowering standards)?"- Brian Aldiss

Thanks for sharing these quotes Fran. The quote by Vita Sackville-West is how I feel most days. Those times where one thing after another flows is usually the times I cannot stop and write them down. If only my mind were a tape recorder!GraceFran, So glad you wrote this. I enjoyed it a lot.Jean
"A writer should say to himself, not, how can I get more money? but what is the truth? (e).
Good writing Fran- This makes one proud to be a writer- and encourages us to be better writers-Thanks - Always- Ella
Beautiful article. I always trust your writing & I enjoyed this one. Thank you for sharing !!
I'm all for reading a good book. Love the smell and feel of one in my hand while sitting next to the wife and having a peaceful night.
I'm looking for a publisher to be kind to me this month. Seriously, I agree with you Fran, I don't believe a writer chooses writing; I believe the desire to write, chooses the writer. I especially like the quote by Brian Aldiss. Interesting article.
Oh, boy can we all relate to this one! Our thoughts, pounded out on the keyboard sometimes late at night - the research, the heart, the bareness of our soul on printed paper - yep, I think you are writing to writers! Love you, Lady!
Excellent Fran. Don't think I could consider myself a writer, but this motivated me, so surely it will motivate many who are. Great stuff. Keep 'em comin' girl.
Thanks for sharing it ma'am...Enjoyed the read, very nice article...CP
