Let Me Tell You About Victoria

A few years ago I worked in a doctor's office with a woman who always ate a healthy lunch. In fact, since she was the office manager, she filled the fridge with healthy goodies and almost anything I would request. I would usually see her eating yogurt, salad or fruit. I will not use her real name. Let's call her Victoria. Victoria lived had a beautiful condo on the sunny beach in Florida. She religiously walked on the beach in the late afternoon and on weekends. So lets add this up. So far, we know she exercised regularly and ate a healthy lunch. However, what I have not mentioned yet, is that she never ate breakfast.

Victoria wanted desperately to lose weight. Even though we worked for doctors and she knew it was not healthy to skip breakfast, I don't think she realized the full impact of NOT eating breakfast. Sad to say, she never lost weight.

There must be a lot of Victorias in the world who refuse to eat breakfast and actually think they could lose weight by skipping breakfast. In their mind hunger equals weight loss or perhaps they don't think they have time to eat breakfast.

Why Eat Breakfast?

The truth is this: Breakfast is essential. Your body has been deprived of food throughout the night; therefore your metabolism has slowed. If the cells do not receive sufficient nutrients they will begin to function less efficiently on smaller amounts, and they will actually store more fat to use during these times of nutritional deprivation (consumeraffairs.com)

Most of us probably grew up eating a big bowl of warm oatmeal before going to school. Let me re-introduce you to this fine Breakfast for champs. Here is a breakfast that will not only jump-start your body into burning calories, but it is so delicious, especially prepared my way:

My Magical Oatmeal Formula:

Oatmeal (cooked). While warm add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 9 almonds (unsalted), a touch of sea salt, and unsweetened applesauce (instead of sugar - optional). Mix, then pour fat free milk on oatmeal.

Lets go over each ingredient and find out why it is magical:

Research Study Shows Oatmeal Helps Dieters Lose Weight .

According to the Quaker Oats Website, a study done by the Rippe Lifestyle Institue shows the connection between eating oatmeal and losing weight.

The results, which were released in 2006 at the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO), showed that those who ate a bowl of Quaker Weight Control Instant Oatmeal in the morning as part of a lower calorie diet, along with a walking exercise routine, lost weight.

Researchers involved 40 overweight individuals in this study. One part of the group was assigned a routine of walking for exercise for 15 to 30 minutes. The other part ate a lower calorie diet, which included Weight Control Oatmeal each morning in addition to the walking.

The results showed that the group who only walked lost no weight, and the group that ate oatmeal as a part of their diet lost an average of five pounds in the first four w e eks of the research, and 10 pounds at the 12-week mark.

Cinnamon Helps In The Fight Against Obesity

Cinnamon creates a thermogenic burn. It reduces cholesterol levels - in particular, lowering bad cholesterol while leaving good cholesterol the same. It is cinnamon's effect on blood sugar that makes it a potential help in the war against obesity, insulin resistance, sometimes known as "predicaments," and the "Metabolic Syndrome." Cinnamon can be used in its powdered or stick form, adding it to drinks and foods, or as a supplement. (emedical.com)

Almonds: Good Fat, Fiber And Protein

Yes, nuts are high in calories, but they are also a great source of protein, fiber, and the "good" (monounsaturated) fat -- all of which can help in weight loss. A small handful (10-to-12 nuts) of walnuts or almonds can actually help you "lower your risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes," says Somer. Try some in your salad, with a piece of fruit, or sprinkled in your cereal – oatmeal, of course. (webmed.com)

Almonds' essential fatty acids help raise your body's metabolism. Just don't overdo it because they're also very high in calories.

Milk: Calcium Fights Fat In Belly

"Preliminary evidence suggests that if someone is already eating a low-fat, portion-controlled diet and then they get three servings of nonfat milk a day, they lose more weight than someone who eats the same number of calories but doesn't have the milk," Somer says. The theory is that calcium may inhibit the storage of fat, and it seems that the weight loss comes largely from the midsection.

Here are the calcium levels recommended for adults by the USDA:

Ages 9 to 18: 1,300 mg

Ages 19 to 50: 1,000 mg

Ages 51 and over: 1,200 mg

Be a champion against fat and obesity by eating this marriage of five delicious and nutritious ingredients: Oatmeal, sea salt, cinnamon, almonds and fat-free milk (unsweetened applesauce is optional). It is a breakfast for Champs.

The word breakfast itself probably came from two words break and fasting. After a long night of no eating or fasting, one breaks it in the morning, thus breakfast. I like to eat all the things you mentioned there, oatmeals, cinnamons, almonds( at times with chocolate candies). Were you a doctor before?

I have a medium sized frame and hope not to reach obesity. I am average weight for my height, so I must be eating somewhat healthy. I never miss breakfast, maybe have a moderate lunch, then big dinner.

Hi Fran.

I LOVE oatmeal and eat it everyday for breakfast. In the summer I eat a combination of rolled oats, quick oats, cinnamon and raisins. I do not cook it (just too darn warm in the house to enjoy that much) and I eat it dry (can't have milk). In the cooler months, I eat steel cut oats cooked with raisins, no cinnamon. I love the taste of oats. Bernd jokes that I am part horse. :)

I've always thought that skipping breakfast was a bad idea for just the very reason you presented. But I know a lot of perpetual dieters who do just that no matter how often I tell them (busybody me!) why it is not a good idea.

Great job of getting the word out about oatmeal and breakfast!

Fran! I'm all for being a Champ! I am such a creature of habit. I have a coffee and a slice of toast with peanut butter for breakfast whether I'm hungry or not. I always knew oatmeal was a healthy choice, so I got my husband and children in the habit of eating it. (And no I've never said the words, Don't do as I do, Do as I say). :) I think I'm going to switch it up and mix some oatmeal into my morning ritual as well. Thanks for the reminder!

What a sensible and yummy approach to weight-loss, Fran.

As it happens, I just bought a box of oatmeal the other day for the first time in yonks! I'd forgotten how much I love it. I've been trying to persuade myself to eat it at breakfast, but I so love coffee and toast with marmalade. However, you've convinced me, thanks!

Magical article Fran. Although I'm really not much of one for breakfast, usually just to busy in the morning, and forget that my health is important while trying to wisp away the cobwebs, this sounds to magnificent to pass up. I shall try it, and hopefully this could be a new beginning for me. New beginnings are hard to come by at my ripe old age, but this could be just the motivation that I needed, thank you.

I ate your magic potion before going to bed last night. I was hungry and they say that the carbs from oatmeal may help the body rest better. I am wondering if I got too much sea salt in it as it seemed to overpower the taste (maybe more sprinkled out than I thought).....slept like a baby and felt very healthy upon arising first thing (smile). Thanks Lady! I don't do well with cereal in the AM (blood sugar issues and gets cravings going really fast) BUT for most this soluable fiber solution would be just the ticket for breakfast!
