Dragonflies Are Swarming All Around Me? Is There A Hidden Meaning To This?

Today when I looked out through our glass doors to the golf course, I noticed there were so many of something flying around. I couldn't tell from a distance exactly what kind of insects they were, so I asked my Jim, the golfer, what they were.

"They are dragonflies. They are so thick, especially on the 13 th hole."

Dragonflies are an interesting species. They come from the Odonata order. They can fly like a helicopter; backwards, sideways, or just hover in space. They can mate while in the air. Their large eyeballs are filled with 30,000 individual eyes that allow them to have multi-image vision and super sensitive motion detection.

I have been preoccupied with dragonflies since I went to a funeral a couple of years ago. A beautiful young girl played a song with her flute. Prior to this song, she mentioned that a dragonfly had descended upon her the day the deceased had died. She thought it meant something - maybe the person that died was comforting her.

Since that day, I have collected dragonfly jewelry and even named my web site after a dragonfly. (Don't look for it now because I have let it expire).

An Author, Doris Stickney used the Dragonfly as a means to explain death to children. (Actually I think this is also a good way for adults to relate to death). This short but beautiful tale can be seen when you click here.

"In Native American animal medicine the dragonfly is of the dreamtime and the illusionary facade we accept as our physical reality. It also says that Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change. If a dragonfly comes to you, they think it may be a message that it is time to break down the illusions you have held that restrict your actions or ideas"(Quote from Dianne Lehmann).

I think the beautiful young girl that played the flute moved on after the visit from the dragonfly. As Dianne's quote said, it may have been a message that it is time to break down the illusions that she had that restricted her actions or ideas.

"It makes sense to me because so much sadness seems to stem from change: the loss of a friend or loved one, loss of a job, moving to a new location and leaving things behind." (Quote from Dianne Lehmann)

***  Dragonflies represent the promise of new adventures and beginnings. Their colors take time to come forth, a reminder that with maturity our own true colors come forth! If you notice dragonflies around you change might just be in the making in your life (wearyourintention.com).

Dragonflies have always fascinated me. Those beautiful, transparent wings, and they way they hover... Thanks, Fran. And I loved your use of Dianne's quotes.

I dislike change so much as it is often painful; even a rose aches when it blooms, perhaps.

Dragonflies like butterflies cosmically balance negativity and can be sent to cross your path as a spirit message, to remind you of a blessing, by unseen loved ones.

Pragmatically, dragonflies hovering near you capture and eat unseen mosquitoes and flies on the wing, which protect you from bites.

Prehistoric fossil records reveal that when insects were enormous, dragonflies grew to over two feet in wingspread length.

Effigies made as pins of dragonflies make perfect sense as these insects are resplendent living jewelry in dazzling iridescence.

A spiritual article about an insect is an awesome tandem combination.

Thank you, for a thought provoking read;  paul

Hi Fran.

I have always been fascinated by dragonflies as well. We don't get a lot of them in Arizona accept around water and there isn't always a lot of that. Luckily, there is a golf course at the center of the complex in which Bernd and I live. So I get to see a few dragonflies now and then. A whole swarm of them would be awesome to behold. I would be tempted to go out and sit in the middle of it. Envious me!

I was surprised to see you had quoted my answer to your question in Q & A. I'm glad that I could help a bit. Have you asked yourself why you are preoccupied with dragonflies and what it might mean for you?

I tend to be skeptical of the mystical, but I've had so many unusual things happen around stones and crystals and with various medicine animals coming into my life that I don't really know what to think. I do think that beyond doubt they are a great tool for meditating on our lives and getting us to take a new and fresher look at what is going on. But don't think that I drop into a half lotus position and start ruminating every time I see an ant or a rabbit or a raven. :) If I did that, I'd never get anything done.

Thanks for a lovely story,
Hugs,
Dianne

I don't know much about dragonflies, except that they are supposedly patterned after the fairies- and fairies are believed to be magical- to bring good luck- Maybe your husband will get a hole-in-one! LOL

hi fran,

i love nature.

these dragonflys, which i love to see, remind me of hummingbirds.

i am, however, glad i don't have 30,000 eyes! there's a lot i don't care to see.

my mother loved cardinals, and whenever i see one, i think of her, and know she is giving me a sign that she is watching over me, guiding me, protecting me, and helping me out.

thanks for sharing,

my best regards,

It is amazing physical reality that Dragonflies can fly like a helicopter; backwards, sideways, or just hover in space, mate while in the air and have large eyeballs filled with 30,000 individual eyes. Thanks for information.

I love having the dragonflies around, and we have lots of them. I don't know about any deep meanings but I'm sure they factor in if we want to believe it. They are short lived, range in lovely colors from rose to purple to irridescent greens - something I first truly noticed a few years ago. They delight in the rays of the sun above our pond and hover, flit and flurry about. Delightful and magical.
