Since Betty White Is Now Popular, Can Being Old Or A Grandma Or Nana Be Cool?

I didn’t see Betty White perform on Saturday Night Live, but apparently she was very well accepted. The most amazing thing was that people on FaceBook demanded that she perform on Saturday Night Live and the Network listened. (In an interview, Betty quipped that she didn’t even know anything about FaceBook but after she was introduced, she stated it was a waste of time.) Now FaceBook people are petitioning for her to do a celebrity award ceremony.

Is there a certain longing in the hearts of teens and young adults for Grandma’s brownies or Nana’s humor or just plain Grandmotherly charm?

*Here is what one teen said on a FaceBook Blog about her Nana: “I wouldn't cry or anything, but when I saw the Super Bowl Snickers ad, it reminded me of the good times my nana and I always had, and I could just feel the heat in my eyes. I miss my nana so very much. But I went and had a Snickers bar and thought about that awesome ad, and Betty White sayin' " that's what your girlfrien said! " and I just laughed and thought about Nana G.”

Another teenager had this to say: “My grandparents always took the time to make us feel loved and valued, and still do. If I ever had a problem growing up, I always talked to my grandad or my grandma instead of going to my parents. My grandparents always listened to what I had to say before they started to give advice. My grandparents have a lot of wisdom and a lot of love.”

The next quote is the most heart breaking of all: “My grams sometimes talks about the good ol' days. I think that means the days when professors didn't shoot people at school. I think that means when people didn’t fly planes into buildings because they're upset with their job situations. I think that means times when people like my dad haven't been sent to Iraq twice and are now in Afghanistan. I think that means when people didn't have to wonder if today the Army chaplain is going to show up telling me that my dad is dead. America loves Betty White because she reminds people of a happier time. She reminds people of the grandparents that have held the family together when the family is falling apart.”

Maybe, at last society doesn’t look at us older folks as a stereotype or worse yet, invisible. Maybe it is time we began to celebrate aging and wisdom, instead of making jokes about ourselves. Every age has its advantages.

Oprah said it best: “Time isn't the enemy. Fear of change is. Accept that nothing lasts forever and you'll start to appreciate the advantages of whatever age you are now.”

So do I.  I used to brush by Grandma's long hair - she was so patient.  My other Grandma always sang to me at nap time.  Best to you.

Thank you Fran. I adored my grandma. She loved the Lord and helped others to find Christ. What a wonderful legacy she left. My prayer is that I will be as diligent as she was.

I am sure you will also leave a legacy for your grandchildren and others.  I don't think grandparents get enough credit for how they influence the life of others.  The best to you.
