Easter Today In A Changing World: Is The Easter Story Of Jesus A Fairy Tale?

The world is changing faster than I ever dreamed.
Technology is giving us more and more options on how to communicate and live our lives with more ease. We can twitter a message in a few seconds. We can communicate with others on the other side of the globe. We can be available via cell phone at all times.
Medical Science has allowed us to have a heart or kidney transplant or give birth to designer babies.
People are more knowledgeable, more sophisticated and more doubtful of the Easter Story – the story of Jesus Christ dying on the cross, so that we may have life eternal. Some are saying this is just a fairy tale. Some have become so discouraged and heartbroken by life’s trials that they no longer believe in God.
I am very far from being a perfect person. I haven’t gone regularly to church in a few years, I don’t pray as much as I should. Most of the time I am so engrossed with my own life, I care little what happens to others. I am selfish. I sometimes talk about other people. I am a sinner. I even question God at times. I even get angry with God.
I also am a believer. I believe in Jesus as my Savior. This is why he died on the cross – not for a perfect person (which I could never be anyway), but he died for imperfect people like me. That doesn’t mean that I go around looking for sinful things to do, but it does mean that I do not have to live by a law to be a Christian.
Sometimes we Christians sound arrogant the way we proclaim that we go to church; we give money, we pray, etc. The fact is that we are just sinners. We are going to have eternal life because Jesus died for us. Even if we tried to be perfect, it is impossible because we are all human. We are born into sin.
Easter, to me is the promise of eternal life. It is the promise of a life even better after this one. It is freedom from fear. It is joy. It is celebration.
How do we believe such an extraordinary story that sounds like a Fairy Tale? We believe because God is God. We cannot possibly understand in our finite minds the mystery of Jesus, much less the world created around us. How arrogant of us to think that we could understand everything.
We have to believe simply like a child. That is probably the hardest thing of all, since we humans are so scientific in proving everything. Nevertheless, we cannot lean on our own understanding.
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. (Mark 10:15)
I am not a Bible scholar, nor a minister. I am just an everyday sinner who delights in Easter with all its promises.
I believe like a child. I am a child of God!

Top-level comments on this article: (4 total)Amen Fran,I love this article. It reminds me of the story where the Pharisiee and tax collector stood before the Lord and proclaimed who they were. It was then that the tax collector put his eyes to the ground and said, "I am only a broken sinner," then the Lord told him, "Enter the gates of Heaven." Yes, I am paraphrazing.Jesus as you said, came for the broken sinner and if we were perfect in a perfect world, we would not have needed Jesus as our Lord and Savior.Love, hugs and blessings,MichelleMichelle, thanks for the story of the pharisee. I either had forgotten it or never heard it. I am so glad we don't have to be perfect to enter heaven.
It is good to hear from you. I hope you are feeling much better these days. Maybe you have a blessed and happy Easter.

Hello Fran, Thanks for this inspiring article. Sometimes in order to receive a blessing, you have to be a blessing. "Thank YOU for this blessing".You are correct in that people today for some reason would call this great story a fairy tale. I believe its because they choose to trust their FEARS rather than their FAITH. So I choose to remind them that in the absence of FAITH, fear is always present.HAPPY EASTERI am afraid too many people these days really do think it is a Fairy Tale. How very sad. Thanks for reading my article and thanks for the quote that in the absense of faith, fear is always present. I like that quote.
