Browsing Back In Time: Do You Want To Time Travel Back To The 50’s?

I listened intently as Connie Francis sang, "My Happiness." Jim and I were visiting Tasti -Freeze and munching on burgers and French fries (just like we were teens and didn't have to worry about calories, cholesterol, etc.). I let my mind drift to another time the 50's.
The 50's had the best music, in my opinion. Connie Francis sang soulful, sad songs. Some of the other songs were: Unforgettable-Nat King Cole, You, You, You Ames Brothers, That's Amore'-Dean Martin, Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel-Elvis Presley, Love Letters In The Sand-Pat Boone and Rock Around The Clock-Bill Haley and His Comets.
When you think of a song in the 50's or 60's, you can usually remember what you were doing about then. For instance, when I was a college freshman, this song, Diana by Paul Anka was played over and over each day at the Hub (cafeteria). Apparently, there was a sound system from the Hub, because even changing classes; one could hear the music all over the campus.
When I think of the 50's, I think of Jim's 58 Blue Impala, the A & W Drive Inn (where Jim and I met), sock hops and an introduction to pizza. Remember when someone would say, "Why don't you take a long walk on a short pier?" McDonald's made its appearance; Hula Hoops were popular and Drive-In Movies were available (did you ever pile a couple more people in the trunk?) In 1949, the average price of a new house was $12,400; the average income was $3,210.00; a gallon of gas was 25 cents in 1959. However, the average income was only $3,210.
What if we could travel back in time to the 50's and 60's, just like Peggy Sue did in Peggy Sue Got Married? Here is an example: Peggy Sue: I know lots of things that are gonna happen. There's gonna be testtube babies and heart tranplants. An American named Neil Armstrong is going to be the first man to walk on the moon, July 20, 1969.
Would I really like to go travel back to the 50's or 60's? No, I would not. I also remember the hard part about being a teenager and not knowing what the future would hold.
Peggy Sue only dreamed about her travel back in time, but that dream made her realize that she is in a good place and indeed did make some good decisions.
I didn't really want to travel back in time to the 50's and 60's. I just wanted to go there and browse for a few minutes.

Top-level comments on this article: (6 total)I like this article, Fran. 50's music was great, wasn't it? However, there is NO WAY I'd want to repeat teenage years. :)
Oh Fran how this brought back memories and all good ones too. I also loved Elvis and the song "all in the game" , however my all time favourite who gets a mention here has to be Dean Martin. I love him that much that I have Cds that hold about 24 or more songs compiled playing the one same song all the way through . I also loved and still do Doris Day. Thanks for this articleKeep wellKacy
I turned 13 in 1961, the 60s were my teenage years. Yes Fran the 50s and 60s were some good times as well as some bad times.Although I look back at them with sentimental feelings I sure wouldn't want to re-live my teenage years. good article.
I think the good old days are today Fran but its always fun to sneak a peek into the yesteryears. Your article brought up memories for a lot of us. Thanks for sharing.
I think we are all from that same era - I remember mixers, poodle skirts (I, of course had a kitty skirt) and Henry's with 15 cent hamburgers.... submarine races etc. I was 15 in 1961 - David was my sister's age apparently. Thanks for writing this - the best time and place to be is now but love your comment about brousing for a few....
"I just wanted to go there and browse for a few minutes." Ain't that the true, Fran? I feel the same way about those "good ole days" too: just go browsing without hanging out. ~mogama~
