Do You Have Any Questions for God? How To Find Comfort In A Stressful World

A year ago I was at my sister-in-laws funeral when the minister said, “This is another thing I am going to question God about some day.”

She was referring to the fact that my sister-in-law, Anna had a very difficult life (to say the least). She was manic-depressive all of her adult life. As a family member who witnessed this, I have to say that is one of the worse afflictions on this planet. Medications work with some people who have this illness and others struggle and are ill even with the medications. Anna seemed to cycle faster and faster, as she grew older, no matter what the medications. Then there were numerous other health problems that stemmed from the mental illness.

I was both surprised and delighted when the minister said, “I am going to ask God about that some day (meaning, of course when she died and would be with the Lord.)

This was an OK sign for me that it would be all right to have some questions for God when I meet him. I may even have a long list. I really don’t understand many things that have happened in my life and in the life of others. That doesn’t mean that I doubt God’s in any way. It just means that in my own human, limited mind, I cannot understand some things.

It seems to be the older I get, the more challenging life is. It is a changing world. Problems begin to come one right after another. It reminds me of swatting mosquitoes on a hot summer evening in the south. You can’t keep up. You swat one mosquito and another appears. That’s how life gets sometimes. You try to keep sadness and troubles away, but they just keep coming.

One of the most profound words that have ever been said to me was by a fellow employee years ago. The words were “Life is hard.”

Let’s just leave our questioning for some day when we are not in this world any more. I am sure we will have time to ask questions. Until then, there are many Bible verses that bring comfort to the soul. Here are a couple of my favorites:

John 16:33 " I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. "

James 1:2-3 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

Thank you for sharing, Fran. My mother always said: "Old age isn't for sissys." She was right! Life is hard, but by the grace of God "we can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens us."
