The Outpatient Surgery Of A Special Friend: Did The Doctor Know This Patient Was Really Special?

The surgery waiting room was just that a waiting room nothing more nothing less. The dingy-looking tile floor and bare walls reminded me how surgery is; it is cold, stark and exact.
A somewhat chubby teen swished in and sat right across from me. His eyes darted around. He appeared to be looking for something or someone. He sported silver dangly earrings on both ears and his mouth was so full of little silver dots that I wondered how he could eat or talk. He had four silver dots installed right under his lower lip.
How ironic is this? Some want to do so much to their body (insertions, piercing tattoos) and some of us want to stay clear of surgeries or anything that resembles a violation of our body.
A name was called and a middle aged couple hurried toward the desk. I didn't bring a book but it seemed like the waiting room was going to be fairly entertaining.
I began to wonder if this place was good enough for my friend to have surgery. Was it clean enough? Was it sterile? Would there be infections? I hoped that my friend would be OK here because he is very special.
Does the doctor and the surgical assistants realize that he is very special? Do they know that he has never hurt anyone or hated anyone? Do they know that he loves everyone in his own special way? I am quite honored to be his friend.
At last the door opened and there he was. I whispered a quick "thank you God" when I saw that he was OK. I listened to the nurse's directions but kept my eyes steadily on him.
I was so relieved that the day surgery was over and I could take my friend home. I assured him that I would get him something to eat and drink. Then he could relax.
"It's all over," I said.
"Remember, I told you it would be OK." You are going to be just fine now."
I ran my fingers through his hair. He hugged me over and over again.
I wanted him to rest on our car trip home but he was much too excited to see me and very anxious to get to his home.
I hoped he would forgive me for making this surgery decision without his knowledge.
I stroked his cream-colored and white coat, as he wagged his tail.

I like the way you write here, Fran. I was trying to guess who this special person is, and the answer came as a nice surprise, right at the end of your story.
