Please Tell Me When Spring Will Come: A Conversation With The Weatherman.

Dear Weatherman,

I have never really had a desire to talk to you, but quite honestly, I have a complaint to make about the weather. Thats right, you heard me.

What did you say? Yes, I do live in Florida.

Unusual? Did you just say the weather was unusual. I think that is an understatement. I would say it is unusually cold.... very cold.

Mr. Weatherman, lets get right down to what I called you about. I think there has been some mistake. You see, I live in Florida. You know, Florida the Sunshine State . That is just what I want to bring up, the subject of sunshine. We are having too many rainy, gray days. We are used to sunshine, not gray rainy days. We have not developed any coping skills for these "gray days." What are we supposed to do? I am serious. I really don't know what to do on these days. Do I take up knitting or perhaps put on a big pot of vegetable soup?

I think you must have gotten Florida mixed up with one of those northern states. In case you have forgotten, we can't play golf when the golf course is frosty. Also, most of us don't have a fireplace that we can sit by and be warm and cozy. I know we have modern heating systems but when it is this cold, I really need to see some fire burning somewhere.

Mr. Weatherman, I have to tell you something. I lost my jacket, gloves and hat. I know normally, we don't even need gloves and a knit hat in Florida, but I bought these items last winter as a fashion statement. However, this winter gloves and a knit hat would be more than a fashion statement. These items would feel gloriously warm about now. Here's the thing. I lost my jacket and my hat and gloves were in the jacket. So I thought to myself, no big deal, I will just go buy another jacket, since that one was about 5 years old. Guess what, Mr. Weatherman, there are no jackets to be found within any department store within a 100 mile radius or maybe not any in Florida at all! Also, I was going to buy some boots. I figured by now (Feb), I could find some on sale, but no boots, anywhere in any stores.

Are you listening, Mr. Weatherman, there are no boots or jackets in Florida right now that I could purchase. (I know I could order on-line, but I am just telling you that when Florida gives out of boots and jackets, it is a new era).

I don't know what is happening. Our winter visitors from other states are now looking at me in an accusing way kind of like they have been duped. I try to apologize and say Florida is not normally like this because I have lived in Florida all my life. I really feel bad for them, as I know they wanted to thaw out and warm up.

I  now have a deep respect and admiration for those who live in those cold northern states. I don't know how they get through winters because it isn't even snowing here and I am complaining How do they keep their sanity when it is too cold to go outside?

Mr. Weatherman, I just have one more thing to say and then I am through venting.

What's that? I know. You only talk about the weather, not cause weather. I'm just saying..

Well anyway, one more thing. If it has to be this cold and you really can't do anything about it, maybe just for one day you could make it snow. You see, I have never seen snow and I hear everyone say how beautiful it is when it is falling. Now I don't want to have any problems here because we don't have equipment here in Florida to clear snow from the roads, so I don't mean for several days. Just one day of snow is all I am suggesting.

I have to go get dressed now. It is almost noon and I still have my pajamas on. It's just that I feel so cold, Mr. Weatherman. I feel so very cold.....

I've lived in norther Florida for 13 years now, I'm originally from the state of Maine. Yes we've had cold days here this year but none could compare to the below zero weather we used to get in Maine.

I am anxious for warmer weather to come here.

Hi Fran,

While reading this cold article of yours I am having a really sunny day down here. I can't stand the coldness as well. The time I was aboard I bought a heater for the room. We have an air conditioner otherwise the baby can't sleep well and me too!

I'm laughing as I read this - because just yesterday I decided to fire my weathergirl.  My daughter had watched the news the previous day and reported that yesterday was supposed to be cloudy w/chance of clouds, high of 18c (what's that ...about 66F).  So, I  did a load of laundry as 66F is right balmy up here on Vancouver Island in BC (think Vancouver where the Olympics just were - we're about 2 hours away as the crow flies - and live in the Hawaii of Canada just outside of Victoria).

Wake up yesterday morning and I see that it had rained the night before.  Darn! My laundry which I'd hung out the evening before was now drenched.  That's ok - my weathergirl said it was going to be warm, sunny, w/ a slight chance of cloud.

So, I'm working away at a friend's computer (long story why I'm here & not home) - but I look outside & the warm, sunny w/ slight chance of cloud  day is monsooning - & guess what's hanging outside on the clothesline at home.  You got it - all of my laundry.

Yep, I told my weathergirl she was fired.

PS - I know we're not Fla by anymeans - but - we have had the most exceptionally warm winter - only 1 cold snap (compared to last winter where we had record snowfalls and it at one point has snowed for 41 days straight - never heard of in our area).  In Victoria the cherry trees are in bloom, the hyacinths are up, the snowbells & crocus' are up....spring is in the air (and did I mention today it's warm, sunny with just slight cloud?) :-)

I don't want those oranges to get too cold tho - they're not as good when they're frozen!

Very entertaining article Fran. We just moved to Cal. from Oregon and all the neighbors have accused us of bringing the rain. It has done nothing but rain since we moved here which is unusual for this area but not for Oregon. Thanks for sharing your humor.

The weathermen in our area are WRONG 55% of the time (comes from having all these incredible mountains - we get surprises! Have the pot of veggie soup on and Wal-Mart is selling knit hats with matching gloves for a mere dollar - they put the swimming suits out already and we have 6 inches of white stuff on the ground (March is our snowiest month and April our 2nd snowiest) and there are 3 foot drifts out by the snow fence! Go figure.
