Avatar, The Movie: Do We All Dream Of Going To Pandora? Why Do We Like Science Fiction?

Even for Florida, yesterday was a "biting cold" that chilled me from head to toe. My husband Jim and I are used to sunshiny days one right after another. I am not really a science fiction fan, so maybe it was this unusually cold and depressing day that led Jim and I to see the movie, Avatar.

(James Cameron's epic motion picture, Avatar - in theatres December 18th worldwide. Starring Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez.)

The beginning of the movie was slow, as the plot was set. I began to be impatient. If nothing else, I thought to myself, I am seeing flowers and other "things" coming toward me, thanks to my 3-D glasses.

Twenty minutes into the movie, I was seduced into this science fiction world. I was getting accustomed to seeing 10 foot, blue-skinned Na'vi with ears that moved when they talked. The Na'vi tribe appeared to live in harmony with nature, whereas the humans appeared to be stupid and selfish. The humans were not willing to learn from the Na'vi, a tribe that resided on a planet called Pandora.

After another twenty minutes went by, I was not only seduced into this science fiction world. I was mesmerized. Pandora was an ideal planet. (Science fiction is about the known and the possible, a world that grows from our own imperfect present from tor.com) I longed to go to Pandora.

I wasn't the only one who wanted to go to Pandora. CNN recently reported people who have seen Avatar are experiencing depression. Philippe Baghdassarian, forum administrator had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie.

"I wasn't depressed myself. In fact the movie made me happy," Baghdassarian said. "But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don't have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a completely different world and that caused them to be depressed."

I began to wonder why Science Fiction is so popular and also why so many longed for Pandora. Of course the obvious answer is that we live in an imperfect world and are constantly reminded of that, via violence, crime, selfishness and violation of our environment.

I think the place we really long for is heaven. Maybe it is somewhat like Pandora. It even could be another planet or moon - how do we really know? We long for a perfect world where love is ever present and we are at peace - at last.

Love rules the camp, the court, the grove -- for love is Heaven, and Heaven is love.-- Lord Byron from Heavenly Quotes

"Heaven and the spirit world are much more real, beautiful and lasting than the world which you can see with your natural eyes at this very moment. - David Brandt Berg

Great article Fran.

I had the same feeling when I came out of the movie house, one of the science fiction movies I liked a lot.
