How to Know If Someone Really Loves You: 3 Powerful Questions to Ask Yourself

Once upon a time, there was a 40 year old female, semi-invalid drug addict, who lived with her father. Her father, who was neurotic had forbidden her to ever marry. Then one day, she met someone and fell in love. The two lovers had to court in secret, because of her father. They eloped to Italy, where they were married.

Does love not come to people who are challenged? Does love not come to people who may or may not be attractive?

This young lady was Elizabeth Barret, a talented poet and of course the person she fell in love with was Robert Browning. she was born in 1850 and her most famous sonnet is one of my favorites, also. It speaks of love:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love them to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints - I love thee the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! - and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death....
Elizabeth Barrett Browning

We all want this thing called love. If we could just reach out and grab it at random. However, so many times, the feeling of love vanishes almost as soon as it is captured. It is kind of like cotton candy. As soon as you put it in your mouth, poof, it is gone.

Here is the good news, though. True love really can be experienced. You can be loved. You can love. Sometimes, though real true love is hard to recognize. Here are my three power questions that will tell you whether or not you are loved:

Do I think it would be easy to break off a relationship? No, I think it would be horribly painful, but in the end, true love sometimes involves a sacrifice. If you or your partner are willing to put your happiness in the background for the sake of the other, that is a sure sign or true love.

Philosopher Gottfried Leibniz said that love is "to be delighted by the happiness of another."

1. Does this person put your well-being and happiness over his/her own?
For example, if you are now in a relationship, would it truly be better for that person, if you stepped aside and broke off the relationship? What if the person is already married, is it really in his/her best interest for you to pursue them or are you just being selfish?

That are many other situations. Maybe the person that you think you love would really be better off without you...it could be an age difference factor, different lifestyles or maybe because of cultural differences, you know that person would be better off without you.

2. Love is a verb. Do you feel action from the person whom you love or is love simply a non-action word?

Love is a verb: "an act, occurrence or mode of being." Love, as a verb refers to behaviors. Obviously, this means behaviors that other person shows toward you tells the story of whether they love you or not.(http://www.psychalive.org)

Writers know the phrase "show me, don't tell me." When you are writing a book, you don't want to just write down Sally loves Harry. You want to write something like: "The touch of his hand was suddenly almost unbearable in it's tenderness."

Like a writer, a person will "show you, not tell you" by the way he/she treats you.

3. Does he/she care about your spiritual self and uphold above everything else?
When I was doing research, I found many different meanings of "spiritual," but for my intentions in this article, these two definitions are the closest I could find:

Either the world is an accident or it has a purpose. I think spirituality is a matter of your outlook on life, relationships, and the world itself. (explorefaith.org)

Love, kindness, generosity, awe and wonder, art, ethics, and music are just some of the obvious parts of life that cannot be understood or adequately captured by scientism and which we value. We call those aspects spiritual. So it's easy to understand that someone can be spiritual and yet not be particularly interested in most existing conceptions of God or religion. (spiritualprogressives.org)

The person who loves you should care about your spiritual growth, as that is the whole definition of life.

"You are not a human being in search of a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being immersed in a human experience."

Teilhard de Chardin quotes (French Geologist, Priest, Philosopher and Mystic, 1881-1955)

Here is a quote from the movie, Forget Paris.

When you love someone,
And you love them with your heart,
It never disappears,
When you're apart.
And when you love someone
And you've done all you can do,
You set them free,
And if that love was true...
When you love someone
It will all come back to you.

I challenge each of you to wait for "real love."
