Have you ever talked to someone who knew you years ago and they said, "You haven't changed a bit."

Here is what Alice in Wonderland (by Lewis Carroll) said as she pondered if she had changed or not:

" Alice took up the fan and gloves, and, as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking: `Dear, dear! How queer everything is to-day! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think: was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is, knew that were of the same age as Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle!' And she began thinking over all the children she herself, to see if she could have been changed for any of them."

None of us are who we were last year, last week, or even the most recent breath we took because of life's experiences. (Alice asked, "I wonder if I've been changed in the night?") The cycles of joy, happiness, disappointment and discouragement of living keep us wondering as Alice did when she said, "I think I can remember feeling a little different."

Some people try to remain the same as they were years ago. Have you ever been to a class reunion and felt like some were "stuck in time?" I have. Sadly, some still wanted to be known as a cheerleader or class president or whatever made them feel important at that time.

The class members who seemingly had accepted change and moved on were very interesting and it was almost like getting to know a whole different person. They had a completely different countenance, as if daily, they were accepting being "changed in the night." After all, one is 17 or 18 years old at the time of graduation and studies show that teen's brains have not fully developed.

This brings me to the second half of what Alice said; "But if I'm not the same, the next question is, Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle!'"

Some might say that we are the sum of our body, mind and emotions. We may know our family members or friends by these three things. Then something happens, that person is not who we thought they were. Lets use that analogy on us. Maybe something happens in our life that is very stressful and we react differently than we though we would. We could say, "I surprised myself." or "I was stronger/weaker than I thought"

As we age, I think we get to know ourselves better and we "surprise" ourselves in different ways. For example lately, it has become quite clear to me that I really need a lot of space and "alone time." Now that I know that about myself, this will explain reasons that I do/don't so other things. (Too many events slated on the calendar make me unhappy.)

If you believe in God and the fact that we have a soul, that adds a whole other dimension to your self-discovery. God teaches us as no one else can, "who we are."

Here is the secret for happiness. Happiness comes from each day, discovering and cherishing who you are. You are the only person on the face of the earth that is just you.

Nobody can be exactly like me. Sometimes even I have trouble doing it. (Tallulah Bankhead)

As we approach the New Year, it would be wise think of yesterday, but more importantly, don't be afraid to embrace the new you.

Even Alice in Wonderland said, "But it's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then."
