The public continues to be mesmerized and even hypnotized by the secret life of Tiger Woods. Curiosity has reached one of its highest levels as we struggle to understand how we could have been duped by an All-American, clean-cut image of Tiger Woods that was carefully painted in detail by the media and endorsements. The whole world stood in awe as this man made golf history by winning and setting new standards, time after time.
Tiger Woods is on our mind so much that all other news seems to be secondary and unimportant. Recently President Obama told us that we will be sending more troops to Afghanistan; Healthcare reform is still being debated; Last but not least, a very special day, Christmas Day is soon to be celebrated. However, the latest news about Tiger Woods continues to dominate the press and the media.
Oral Roberts 91, a very important religious evangelist and visionary died of pneumonia December 15, 2009. He was very controversial because of some of his beliefs, yet he was definitely part of our American culture.
Roberts' fund raising was controversial. In January 1987, during a fund raising drive, Roberts announced to a television audience that unless he raised $8 million by that March, God would "call him home." Some were fearful that he was referring to suicide, given the impassioned pleas and tears that accompanied his statement. He raised $9.1 million. Later that year, he announced that God had raised the dead through Roberts' ministry. Some of Roberts' fundraising letters were written by Gene Ewing, who heads a business writing donation letters (wikipedia)
He was a man who continued to preach faith, healing, and the love of God, although many believed him to be eccentric. Through the many years that he served God, Oral Roberts experienced many disappointments and personal heartache.
Roberts' daughter Rebecca Nash died in an airplane crash on February 11, 1977 with her husband, businessman Marshall Nash. Roberts' eldest son Ronald committed suicide in June 1982, five months after receiving a court order to undergo counseling at a drug treatment center. The other two Roberts children are still living: son Richard, a well-known evangelist and former president of Oral Roberts University (ORU), and daughter Roberta Potts, an attorney.
On May 4, 2005 Evelyn, Roberts' wife of 66 years, died in a Southern California hospital at the age of 88. (Wikipedia)
The reality today seems to be that we are obsessed with celebrities who have their own set of standards and are not necessarily heroes for our children. That obsession overshadows the death of Oral Roberts, a man of God and other very important issues.

Thanks for drawing our attention to this, Fran. Priorities - and media. The media doesn't cover so many things now days that should have some "press". Marijo
