Tuesday, November 11, Oprah Winfrey had Charla Nash on her show.
Here is what transpired, in case you missed it:
Nash was visiting her pal Sandra Herold in Stamford, Conn., last February, when Herold's pet chimp, Travis suddenly attacked her. The berserk beast tore off Nash's nose, lips and eyelids before being shot dead by cops.
Nash told Winfrey she feels no pain and found out just a few weeks ago that the reason she cannot see is because she no longer has eyes. She said that's a blessing, in a way.
"It's like less for me to worry about if I don't know," she said. (Courtesy of NY Daily News, 11/11/2009
At one point in the show, Oprah unveiled Charla's face.
The poor woman has no idea how she looks and never will because she has no eyes.
This reminds me of years ago at the fair. There would be "freaky" sideshows to draw the crowds. Don't get me wrong; I certainly don't think Charla is a freak. I think she is a beautiful soul who had something terrible happen to her, but Oprah is just plain exploiting Charla's tragedy.
This isn't the first time Oprah has chosen the path of sensationalism. Remember "the pregnant man?"
The Pregnant "Man"

How disappointing. As a rule, I don't watch talk shows, but when I do watch one, it's usually the Oprah Winfrey show, because she seems to hold herself to a higher standard. At least I thought she did. Seems she's taking on more of Jerry Springer's brand of sensationalism every day. Obviously this is a transgendered person who is pregnant, not a "man." Feel sorry for the kid. Obviously this infant's parents are seeking fame and a book deal. If they really wanted to be good parents, they would never subject their child to such intense public scrutiny or potential ridicule. How selfish. Oprah, what's your point in airing this show and "marketing" it in such a sensational way?
Oprah, could it be that you are getting nervous about your rating and you will do whatever it takes to keep your crown as the Queen of talk shows?
Here is what the Daily Beast has to say about her ratings:
Despite her notoriously frank discussions of lady parts and outraging audience gift-giving, Oprah Winfrey has reached a new ratings low. Though she still reigns supreme among her competitors, Oprah may not be the unsinkable ship it was previously believed to be. The show's average viewership fell below 7 million last season, down 7 percent from the year earlier. What's worse: When the program was airing reruns in July, it earned its lowest ratings since debuting in 1985
AOL TV poll found that more viewers would rather have dinner with Ellen DeGeneres than Oprah--a flip from previous results. Her spin off magazine, "O at Home," just folded. For the first time, critics are writing about Oprah fatigue."
What are we so tired of? There are many theories.
Here is my theory. I do not think Oprah's ratings have gone down because of her endorsement for President Obama, nor do I think it is an age thing (she's not that young, any more). I think a lot of people like myself are totally done with her.
You don't have to go to the circus for a sideshow, just tune in to Oprah.
Oprah, have you forgotten your own quote?
Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.
