The day after Thanksgiving, when all through the house. No one was stirring; So, I reached for my computer mouse.
I wanted to see what the world had to say
About this turkey-eating bash of the day.
What I saw on the internet, I could hardly believe
Christmas shopping looms ahead. so roll up your sleeve
Just a dismal reminder, that now is the time to buy.
I shook my head and opened my check book
Knowing it would soon be again time to cook.
I opened my refrigerator door and took a peek,
When I saw all the leftovers, I tried not to freak.
There was turkey and dressing and cranberry sauce
And broccoli and squash and sweet potato toss.
The fridge was jam-packed with food and wine,
I knew what we would eat when we sat down to dine
I gathered the tablecloths and place mats to clean
And dumped everything in sight in the washing machine.
Even the dog stayed out of my way
I was on a cleaning mission with nothing to say.
This Thanksgiving day went by so fast.
I wish there was someway to make it last.
The hours of planning and cooking and such
Is tiring and sometimes seems too much.
I've got to get back on the fast track, for sure
And do all the holiday rat race I can endure.
For that's the American was to celebrate;
Seeing all the Santa signs, I know it's my fate.
Now you might think that I don't like the season
And that I don't really have good reason
To be complaining and finding fault
In all the things that society has taught.
But as I wonder and ponder today
And stumble through to find my way
I ask myself what does this command performance mean
All the expected and have- to things to which we cling?
I wonder what would happen if
I didn't even buy one Christmas gift.
What if I didn't make such a clatter,
While doing things that don't even matter?
Would the world end if I sat by the sea
And watched the waves and relaxed dreamily?
Maybe then I could figure out
What all the expected chores are about.
